This all-embracing journey explores the major cities of Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, which all have distinct proud histories and are unique in their own right. You will notice the harmonious blend of the traditional past with the modern, all working together on a back drop created by artistic flare and culture.
Pass through the exquisite village of Takayama with its terraces of rice paddies, constructed throughout the mountainside whilst being overshadowed by the Japanese Alps. Takayama has been able to preserve its past through its long-standing merchant houses, specialty shops and provincial temples. There are whole blocks of wooden slat facades with deep overhanging roofs which are open for the public to explore.Visit the UNESCO listed hamlet of Shiakawago, home to the high pitched thatched roof farmhouses, which are often referred to as gassho-zukuri, meaning in the form of hands in prayer. These multi storied structures can accommodate up to fifty or sixty people, livestock and also act as a storehouse for staple produce such as rice.
Continue onto Hiroshima where you will encounter why this city is so symbolic with world peace and how it has emerged from the ashes after the World War II atomic bombing.
Travel via ferry across the Inland Sea to the beautiful town of Matsuyama where the city is dominated by Matsuyama Castle. Tonight you will also have the opportunity to visit and sample one of the oldest Japanese onsen’s – Dogo Springs.
Day 01 Arrive Tokyo.
Day 02 Tokyo: Full day sightseeing tour including Asakusa Kannon, Meiji Shrine, Imperial Palace, Tokyo City View, Ginza District, Sumida River Cruise.
Day 03 Tokyo: Early morning tour of Tsukiji Fish Market. Remainder of the day is free at leisure to expore Tokyo.
Day 04 Tokyo – Takayama: Sanmachisuji District located in Takayama, visit a traditional Japanese onsen.
Day 05 Takayama: Full day sightseeing tour to Shirakawa-go Village including (Open Air Museum)
Day 06 Takayama – Kyoto: Morning tour of Takayama’s local markets, Takayama Jinya. Evening walking tour of Gion Geisha District Kyoto.
Day 07 Kyoto: Full day sightseeing tour including Nijo Castle, Golden Pavilion, Kiyomizudera Temple, Fushimi Inari Shrine.
Day 08 Kyoto: Full day sightseeing tour of Nara including Nara Deer Park, Todai-ji (Great Buddha), Kasuga Shrine, Horyuji Temple.
Day 09 Kyoto: Day at leisure.
Day 10 Kyoto – Hiroshima: Himeji Castle, Koko-en Garden. Walking tour of Hiroshima.
Day 11 Hiroshima: Full day sightseeing tour including Miyajima Island, Itsukushima Shrine, Hiroshima Peace Park and Museum.
Day 12 Hiroshima – Matsuyama: Ferry via the Inland Sea of Japan. Explore Matsuyama Castle and Dogo Springs.
Day 13 Matsuyama – Osaka: Sightseeing tour of Osaka including Osaka Castle, Dotombori-dori.
Day 14 Osaka: Morning sightseeing tour of Osaka. Afternoon at leisure for sightseeing or shopping.
Day 15 Depart for Australia.
